N1 Highway Lot 3: Ngaoundéré–Garoua Reconstruction with DERUMANN

Cameroon · Northern Region · 77 km · Design-Build

The N1 Highway is the backbone linking Cameroon’s north to the Ngaoundéré logistics hub and onward to Chad. Lot 3 covers 77 km between Kéraoua Bridge and Sala Bridge. The Ministry of Public Works is executing the project under a 36-month design-build contract, with funding led by the African Development Bank. DERUMANN supports technical coordination for this road reconstruction project, helping align interfaces between roadworks, drainage, electrical routing and bridge structures.

Timeline

  • December 13, 2024: Project officially launched under PAST IV program.
  • April 2026: Site mobilization and early works begin on Lot 3.
  • 2027–2028: Pavement works progress in phases; drainage, bridges, and culverts advanced in parallel.
  • April 2029: Planned completion and handover after 36-month contract period.

Reconstruction covers earthworks, pavement, bridges, culverts, drainage, road lighting, power distribution, toll stations, rest areas, and parking zones. The corridor crosses agricultural and pastoral land with heavy seasonal rainfall, making drainage the decisive factor for pavement durability.

On a project where roadworks, drainage, electrical routing, and bridge structures converge at the same alignment, interface clarity determines whether the schedule holds. That is where DERUMANN comes in, supporting technical coordination across these disciplines so that utility corridors, culvert placements, and pavement sequences are aligned before field execution begins.

Scope at a Glance

Road: Earthworks, subgrade treatment, pavement layers, shoulders, intersections.

Bridges & Culverts: Repair, reconstruction, and new structures along the 77 km.

Drainage: Open ditches, blind drains, French drains, outlet protection.

Lighting & Power: LED lighting at key nodes; dedicated distribution for toll and rest areas.

Ancillary: Toll stations, rest areas, parking, signage, guardrails, black-spot treatment.

Working alongside the contractor and supervision team, DERUMANN helps keep interface documentation and technical queries moving so that design decisions do not stall construction activities. This quiet role matters: when drainage outlets, cable routes, and bridge approaches are resolved early, the main pavement stays open for continuous progress instead of repeated cut-and-repair cycles.

The rebuilt N1 Lot 3 is expected to cut the Ngaoundéré–Garoua drive from roughly three hours to about 90 minutes. DERUMANN’s involvement on the corridor reflects a broader practice of staying close to the interface, present where disciplines meet, without standing in front of the project itself.
